Week 3: New England Patriots (1-1) @ Buffalo Bills (2-0)

The streak continues.  The Bills hung close, but it wasn’t enough as New England cruised to it’s 16th straight win vs. Buffalo.  Tom Brady threw for 300 yards and just 6 incompletions.   Chad Ochocinco burst back into the spotlight with 11 catches and 2 touchdowns.  Buffalo trailed by just 1 at the end of the third quarter, and then everything started to unravel.  Brady was unstoppable in the 4th quarter, connecting on 13 straight completions at one point.

The Pats defense really shut down Ryan Fitzpatrick and Fred Jackson.  Fitz had issues finding open receivers all game, and was constantly under pressure.  Guard Andy Levitre allowed 4 sacks in the game.  Jackson had no room to run, right from the start.  It’s the type of offense performance that the team will want to forget very soon.

The Bills have to be happy with a 2-1 start, which is much better than what many people had predicted for the team.  The team now sits in 3rd place at 2-1 behind the 3-0 Jets and the Patriots.  On an injury front, Spencer Johnson left the game with an abdominal injury, and will miss a week or two of action.  Buffalo heads to Cincinnati to face the 2-1 Bengals next week.

Chris Redman making Falcons fans forget the name Matt Ryan?

There was a big upset in the NFL this week, as the Chris Redman led Atlanta Falcons destroyed the Michael Vick dream team 42-20.  Chris Redman had a breakout day, going 21-30 for 327 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Redman is starting in place of Matt Ryan, who broke his hand this preseason.  In other injury news, Chargers WR Malcolm Floyd has a torn tricep and has been placed on IR.  The 7th year man had just 3 catches for 23 yards on the year.  Finally, LB Brian Urlacher has a broken collarbone and will miss considerable time for the Bears.  Here are some of the top performances in week 2:

  • Lions QB Shaun Hill – 22/46, 304 yards, 2TD, INT
  • Chiefs HB Thomas Jones – 31 rushes, 131 yards, TD
  • Lions WR Nate Burleson – 10 catches, 157 yards, TD
  • Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger – 26/34, 345 yards, 3 TD
  • Steelers WR Mike Wallace – 11 catches, 171 yards, TD
  • Titants RB Chris Johnson – 25 carries, 139 yards, TD
  • Colts QB Peyton Mannign – 29/44, 300 yards, 3TD, INT
  • Colts WR Reggie Wayne – 10 catches, 140 yards, TD
  • Vikings QB Donovan Mcnabb – 24/38, 316 yards, 2 TD
  • Vikings WR Michael Jenkins – 9 catches, 180 yards, TD
  • Redskins QB John Beck – 28/38, 301 yards, 5 TD, INT
  • Bears HB Matt Forte – 23 carries, 110 yards, 2 TD, 5 catches, 40 yards, TD
  • Saints WR Lance Moore – 6 catches, 107 yards, 2 TD
  • Chargers QB Philip Rivers – 27/39, 311 yards, TD, INT
  • Dolphins WR Brian Hartline – 10 catches, 142 yards, TD
  • Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez – 9 catches, 124 yards, 2 TD

Week 2: Raiders (0-1) @ Bills (1-0)

The Buffalo Bills are off to their first 2-0 start since 2008, thanks to a fantastic performance from Steve Johnson.  The 4th year man out of Kentucky caught 10 passes for 132 yards and scored both of Buffalo’s touchdowns.  Johnson ran free with single coverage most of the game, allowing his precise route running to leave him wide open multiple times.  Johnson had this to say after the game:

“Yea when Fitz is on like that, it’s gonna be hard not to have a big game.  We’ve worked well together for a long time, and it’s good to see that chemistry start to turn into wins for us.  We’ve got a big game next week now and we have to look to that.  We have to make a statement vs. New England.”

Indeed they do.  Buffalo hasn’t beaten the Pats since the season opener in 2003.  Time and time again, Tom Brady has methodically dissected the Bills defense, leaving most Bills fans to feel helpless heading into Pats week.  The Bills want that to change, and the only thing that will do that…is a win.

Buffalo was able to put 8 in the box most of the game today, leaving star HB Darren Mcfadden without much room to run.  They dared Jason Campbell to beat them through the air, and with the exception of a stellar day by TE Kevin Boss, he didn’t.

Around the NFL: Week 1

Peyton Manning hit another milestone in week 1.

Peyton Manning is healthy, and still hitting milestones.  The quarterback, who has recovered from offseason neck surgery, threw his 400th career touchdown pass in the Colts loss to Houston.  Manning joins just Brett Favre and Dan Marino as quarterbacks who have surpassed 400 touchdowns.

Here are a look at some of the top performances around the NFL in week 1:

  • Denver HB Knowshon Moreno – 27 carries, 152 yards, TD
  • St. Louis HB Stephen Jackson – 21 carries, 124 yards, TD
  • Chiefs HB Thomas Jones – 24 carries, 120 yards, TD
  • Seahawks HB Justin Forsett – 8 carries, 117 yards, TD, 94 long
  • Panthers HB Jonathan Stewart – 25 carries, 113 yards 2 TD
  • Jets QB Mark Brunell – 22/33, 312 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT
  • Texans QB Matt Schaub – 24/42, 311 yards, TD, 3 INT
  • Packers QB Aaron Rodgers – 19/23, 172 yards, 2 TD, 126.8 rating
  • 49ers WR Michael Crabtree – 5 catches, 141 yards
  • Colts TE Dallas Clark – 6 caches, 132 yards, TD
  • Browns WR Josh Cribbs – 5 catches, 129 yards
  • Redskins WR Jabar Gaffney – 7 catches, 122 yards, TD
  • Jets WR Santonio Holmes – 6 catches, 120 yards, 2 TD
  • Texans WR Andre Johnson – 9 catches, 101 yards, TD

Week 1 – Buffalo Bills (0-0) @ Kansas City Chiefs (0-0)

It wasn’t pretty, but the Buffalo Bills went into Arrowhead today and defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 23-14.  Thanks to a steady rain all game, the Chiefs had major issues throwing the ball, allowing the Bills contain the potent Chiefs rushing attack.  Without Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs had to rely on veteran Thomas Jones, who ran hard and topped the 100 yard mark.  Jones fumbled in the first quarter, and Shawne Merriman picked it up, broke a tackle and ran it back for a score.  Jones did score a touchdown in the 4th to keep the Chiefs in the game, but it wasn’t enough for them to start 1-0.

Matt Cassel was very inaccurate today, and finished with a completion percentage of just 31%.   Buffalo was very successful in shutting down star WR Dwayne Bowe, and rookie Jonathan Baldwin.  They combined for just 4 catches and 40 yards.

For the Bills, Ryan Fitzpatrick overcame a very shaky start to finish 14/26, but only threw for 148 yards and an interception.  Brad Smith was a pleasant surprise throwing the ball, completing 70% of his throws.  Fred Jackson got the tough yards today, averaging almost 5 yards a carry and scoring a touchdown.  Steve Johnson led the team with 8 catches, as he was Fitzpatricks go-to-guy on 3rd down.

Buffalo will return home to face the Oakland Raiders next week in their home opener.  Oakland opened their season with a loss in Denver.

Final Cuts Made

The preseason is now over. The Buffalo Bills have made their final cuts and their 53 man roster is now set.  First, here are the 4 players who couldn’t quite make the big show:

  • LB – Antonio Coleman – An undrafted free agent from 2010, Coleman doesn’t have the speed needed in the NFL.
  • RG – Mansfield Wrotto – Awesome name, not so awesome football player.
  • WR – Buster Davis – With the Bills looking to develop their core, an outsider like Davis was already at a disadvantage.
  • QB – Tyler Thigpen – quarterback struggled with his touch all preseason, and Gailey has decided to go with the younger guy.
