Blount's trip to IR a huge blow to Tampa

 

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed HB LaGarrette Blount on IR today after he tore his tricep during the Bucs 41-30 loss vs. the Saints.  Blount started the game off with 4 carries for 90 yards and 2 touchdowns, including an 84 yard run.  The Oregon product has 342 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns this year, averaging 4.1 yards a carry.  He ran for 1000 yards last year as a rookie.  Here are the scores from week 6:

The Bills have placed LB Shawne Merriman on IR today.  Merriman tore his hamstring in the Bills week 5 win over the Eagles, and will be unable to play the rest of the year.  Buffalo has signed OLB Thaddeus Gibson to a 1 year deal to replace him.

Week 5: Eagles @ Bills

The Buffalo Bills topped the Philadephia Eagles in a wild one at Ralph Wilson Stadium.  CJ Spiller took a kickoff back 98 yards with 2:22 to go, giving the Bills a 32-25 victory.  Buffalo led 25-10 midway through the 3rd quarter, but allowed a pair of touchdowns in just 4 minutes which tied the game up.  Michael Vick threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for 136 yards to lead the Eagles, even after missing almost half the game with an abdominal strain.  He returned just in time to lead the Eagles back to the the game, but it wasn’t enough.

The Bills now sit at 3-2, and are alone in 2nd place behind the 4-1 Jets.  Next week, the team heads to the Meadowlands to face the 1-4 Giants.  Some bad news from the game, Shawne Merriman left the game in the 2nd quarter with a leg injury and did not return.  His prognosis at this time is unknown.  Danny Batten filled in at OLB in his absence.

Benson Runs Over Bills

It took more than 2 to bring Benson down this week.

Most Bills fans were very optimistic heading into Sunday’s game in Cincinnati.  They had a 2-1 team, and were facing a Bengals team with Bruce Gradkowski at quarterback and 3 receivers out due to injury.  Unfortunately, many fans (and apparently the team) forgot about Cedric Benson.  Benson ran the ball 39 times for 281 yards and 2 scores in the Bengals 42-20 blowout win.  This was Cincinnati’s first win against Buffalo in 23 years, going back to the 1988 AFC Championship, in which Boomer Esiason led the Orange and Black to a 21-10 victory.

Benson’s rushing performance ranks him 4th all time, behind only Adrian Peterson (296), Jamal Lewis (295) and Jerome Harrison (286).  Former Bengal great Corey Dillon, who was the first to break Walter Peyton’s record set in 1977, rounds out the top five at 278 yards.  Buffalo didn’t have an answer, as Benson ran through huge holes up the middle all day.  Despite running for almost 300 yards, he only had 3 rushes of 20 yards or more on the day.  It shows how consistent he was at eating the clock and moving the chains all afternoon.

Buffalo now turns it’s attention to the Eagles, who lead the NFC East at 2-2.  It’s been a rough start for the “Dream Team,” but they are starting to find their groove.  After starting 0-2, the defense has really stepped up, allowing just 14 points the past 2 weeks.  They aren’t scoring the points people would expect, as Michael Vick has struggled so far.  Vick has a passer rating of just 77.1, with 4 TD and 4 INT.  What’s worse, is his 2.7 yards per carry rushing the ball.  Look for the Bills to key in on making him pass the ball short and running a safety above Desean Jackson all game.  Defensively, Akeem Jordan has been a man on a mission.  He leads the team with 45 tackles, compared to just 19 from runner up Casey Matthews.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are dismissing rumors that veteran Lawrence Timmons is on the trade block.  But sources say the team is quietly shopping the 25 year old in hopes of at least a first round pick.  Timmons is a starting MLB , but is in the last year of his rookie deal.  The team would like to get value out of him before he leaves at the end of the season via free agency.   A first round pick in 2007, Timmons has 18 tackles and a sack in 3 games this year.

Week 3: New England Patriots (1-1) @ Buffalo Bills (2-0)

The streak continues.  The Bills hung close, but it wasn’t enough as New England cruised to it’s 16th straight win vs. Buffalo.  Tom Brady threw for 300 yards and just 6 incompletions.   Chad Ochocinco burst back into the spotlight with 11 catches and 2 touchdowns.  Buffalo trailed by just 1 at the end of the third quarter, and then everything started to unravel.  Brady was unstoppable in the 4th quarter, connecting on 13 straight completions at one point.

The Pats defense really shut down Ryan Fitzpatrick and Fred Jackson.  Fitz had issues finding open receivers all game, and was constantly under pressure.  Guard Andy Levitre allowed 4 sacks in the game.  Jackson had no room to run, right from the start.  It’s the type of offense performance that the team will want to forget very soon.

The Bills have to be happy with a 2-1 start, which is much better than what many people had predicted for the team.  The team now sits in 3rd place at 2-1 behind the 3-0 Jets and the Patriots.  On an injury front, Spencer Johnson left the game with an abdominal injury, and will miss a week or two of action.  Buffalo heads to Cincinnati to face the 2-1 Bengals next week.
